As the summer begins to shift into fall, your amazing feet hopefully have had lots of barefoot time and may need some love. So let's talk about an often-overlooked hero of graceful aging; your feet. They're your foundation. They hold you steady, move you forward, ground and connect you with the earth. When you care for your feet, you care for your freedom, your confidence, and your long-term vitality.

Why Foot Agility and Strength Matter

  • Foundation of mobility: Strong, agile feet keep you balanced and coordinated, helping prevent falls and injuries as the years go by.
  • Overall health: Healthy feet create better posture and alignment, reducing stress on your knees, hips, and lower back.
  • Circulation: Moving your feet well promotes healthy blood flow, which supports vascular health and even protects against problems like varicose veins.
  • Independence: Strong, flexible feet make everyday activities easier, so you feel capable, independent, and free.
  • Confidence: When your body moves with stability, your brain relaxes. This ease shows up as confidence in every step you take.

What the Research Shows

Recent studies highlight how powerful foot strength really is for healthy aging. People with stronger, more flexible feet had faster walking speeds, better balance, and fewer falls. The science is clear: if we want to keep moving gracefully through life, our feet deserve daily attention.

My Favorite Simple Foot Exercises

Every day, I practice foot care in a variety of ways. Sometimes it’s just while I’m waiting for the kettle to boil or relaxing in front of a show. Here are a few of my recommended go-tos:

  • Toe raises – Rise onto your tippy toes, hold, and slowly lower. I sneak these in while making my morning tea.
  • Toe splays – Spread your toes wide, creating space between each toe. Hold, and relax. If it’s tough, use your fingers to help separate and spread them apart.
  • Crystal pick-ups – Or diamonds, if you’re fancy; marbles work well too. Use your toes to pick up smooth crystal stones and drop them into a bowl.  The most grounding crystals are often darker in color like black tourmaline, smoky quartz, hematite, obsidian, and Red Jasper (below); all of which are connected to the root chakra and help bring stability, security, and sense of calm to the body and mind.
  • Ankle circles – Pretend you're a Radio City Rockette (my greatest fantasy and truly my dream job) and while sitting, lean back in the chair, raise one leg as high as you can. It should be straight and higher than your head. Rotate each ankle clockwise and counterclockwise while sitting. Do 12 each direction. Perfect for binge-watching TSITP.
  • Towel scrunches – Place a towel under your feet, scrunch it toward you, then push it away.

Even a few minutes a day builds strength, balance, and a surprising amount of joy in your movement. But the key here is consistency; daily practice makes all the difference. Then...

Watch for the magic:

The intelligence of the body receives the signal of connectedness. Light energy sends that message through the body via your cells; you begin to notice more ease of movement, you feel more graceful with groove in your step. You feel more safe.

The Power of Grounding

Your feet are more than muscles and bones. They’re also powerful conduits for energy. When you're grounded; you draw healing energy upward. It flows through your feet and legs, calming the mind, steadying the body, and creating a deep sense of balance. Grounding restores you from the inside out.

I created a free grounding meditation to help you experience this for yourself. You don’t need to be barefoot on the grass or even outside, grounding can also happen when seated using your intention. This powerful method will help steady your energy, calm your mind, and help you feel deeply supported. Stay grounded, stay active, and keep moving forward with strength and joy. And wear your ruby toe ring. I love that on you.

Pitter patter, let's get at er.
